The European Commission announced it will introduce export restrictions on rare earth permanent magnet waste and recyclable battery waste starting in early 2026. This move forms part of the bloc’s wider strategy to secure critical raw materials used in key technologies such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, and semiconductors.
Under the REsourceEU plan, the EU aims to reduce dependency on a single foreign supplier for critical materials by investing billions of euros into recycling, processing, and strategic stockpiles. A new European Critical Raw Materials Centre is expected to begin operations in 2026, facilitating monitoring, joint procurement, and stockpiling of essential resources.
The initiative highlights recycling’s role in boosting Europe’s resilience and supply chain security for minerals such as rare earths — essential for permanent magnets used in everything from EV motors to wind turbines.
