Middle East metal recycling conference deemed a success

The conference in Dubai addressed issues including the impact of trade policies on the scrap markets and investment opportunities in Africa for the scrap metal industry.

The Recycling Association of Africa (RAA), a not-for-profit association created to promote waste reduction, reusing and recycling end-of-life material in Africa, says its presence at the 2023 Metals Recycling Confex MEA (Middle East and Africa), organized by Waste & Recycling MEA in Dubai on March 15, was a success.

The conference brought together more than 320 ferrous and nonferrous traders, recyclers, manufacturers and other stakeholders from the Middle East, Africa, Europe and India. Those in attendance were dignitaries from Africa including government ambassadors and the chairman of the Scrap Metal Council in Kenya, who commented on investment opportunities in the African recycling industry.

The opening session of the conference included remarks from Salam Sharif, founding chairman of the RAA, who addressed industry trends, challenges and the future of metal recycling. He also highlighted the objectives behind launching RAA and talked about how the organization is bringing its membership data to regional and global associations to close the loop of the circular economy in Africa and beyond.

The panel discussions included audience members contributing comments on various aspects of the metal recycling industry. A number of key issues were addressed:

  • the impact of trade policies on the scrap markets, investment opportunities in the African market for the scrap metal industry;
  • quality requirements for recycled-content aluminum production, and the need for recyclers to up their game to ensure responsible sourcing;
  • construction and other industrial growth influencing the ferrous market; and
  • the optimistic outlook for the copper industry driven by various factors including the electric vehicle (EV) boom.

The RAA says the conference was attended by leading industry experts, stakeholders and professionals from across Africa, Asia and Europe, who were eager to share their experiences and insights on the current state of the metal recycling industry. The event provided a platform for participants to network, share best practices and learn from each other’s experiences, according to the group.

In line with the conference, the RAA made an agreement with the Scrap Metal Council of Kenya to support sustainability goals by enhancing Kenyan recycling fraternity through investments and other recycling opportunities.

The RAA says it is committed to promoting sustainable practices in the metal recycling industry in Africa, and events such as the March conference are an important step toward achieving that goal.
