Cash fund to boost UK e-scrap collection

The recycling and reuse of small electrical and electronic in the UK has been boosted by a £3.5m fund.

The cash comes from producer compliance schemes that opt to pay a fee if they are short of their annual collection targets: since 2017 this has generated £10.6 million (EUR 11.6 million).

The new Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Fund is worth £3.5 million and is being directed at making it easier for householders to return items that are often not correctly collected and recycled at end of life.

There are two elements. The small electrical waste kerbside collection investment fund is open to any UK waste collection authority to roll-out or expand kerbside collection.

Up to £3 million has been allocated until 2022. There is a further £500 000 to support reuse organisations to build capacity and help expand their small electrical waste collection network and upgrade their reuse,

testing and repair operations. Scott Butler, WEEE Fund Manager, says: ‘We are working with a range of key partners including local authorities,

business, and community groups to deliver projects to encourage recycling and reuse of small waste electricals. ‘Our four-pronged approach to increasing recycling includes:

increased collection methods, reuse investment grants, and communications and behaviour change. Our new kerbside and reuse collection investment funds,

will open up more and easier ways for people to recycle their small electrical household waste.’

The WEEE Fund says its investment is taking place in carefully selected areas such as kerbside collection and reuse networks and will be reviewed before further cash is offered.

The WEEE Compliance Fee was established as a mechanism to support the delivery of the UK WEEE regulations.
